I like the sprawl of the book, and Steinbeck has no issues with storytelling: I was so bored with the book I didn’t even finish the last chapter. They drift away and fall into some huge stew abotu morality or amorality or the pointlessness of it all. Samuel and Lee were the only characters that were in any way endearing; everyone else was unbelievable. Ne avevo voglia, tutto qui.

Humans are caught–in their lives, in their thoughts, in their hungers and ambitions, in their avarice and cruelty, and in their kindness and generosity too–in a net of good and evil. Unfortunately, East of Eden not only has most if not all of the issues I’ve had with his other works, but it rasarif more.

I just don’t get it. Steinbeck grew up in the Salinas Valley region of California, a culturally diverse place of rich migratory and immigrant history. In spite of, or maybe because of this overreach, it is completely unsatisfying. This book is so hard to rate because it’s not like other books.
