I like the sprawl of the book, and Steinbeck has no issues with storytelling: I was so bored with the book I didn’t even finish the last chapter. They drift away and fall into some huge stew abotu morality or amorality or the pointlessness of it all. Samuel and Lee were the only characters that were in any way endearing; everyone else was unbelievable. Ne avevo voglia, tutto qui.

Our concentration spans have gotten much smaller in this age of gadgets and hour newsfeed. For years, the town innkeeper fails to notice that the top three rooms of his house are rented out to prostitutes.
Humans are caught–in their lives, in their thoughts, in their hungers and ambitions, in their avarice and cruelty, and in their kindness and generosity too–in a net of good and evil. Unfortunately, East of Eden not only has most if not all of the issues I’ve had with his other works, but it rasarif more.

You would get to know the characters much more than if you saw the movie, as you would see their thoughts, what other characters think of them, etc. This section needs additional citations for verification. But Steinbeck blows it by turning him into Obi Wan Kenobi. In all, he wrote twenty-five books, including sixteen novels, six non-fiction books and several collections of short stories.

I just don’t get it. Steinbeck grew up in the Salinas Valley region of California, a culturally diverse place of rich migratory and immigrant history. In spite of, or maybe because of this overreach, it is completely unsatisfying. This book is so hard to rate because it’s not like other books.
