The title is appoinment reference to W. I can see no reason why. Julian’s actions precipitated consequences, but each of them were indeed manageable had he done or said the right things. The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went.
The Wasp set of values in vogue in the past, under which the characters in the book must live, struck me as the American version of Victorian values in the earlier era. Maybe the lengthy backstory interludes appointent Caroline’s entire sexual history would make more sense.
