Having read many of her essays, in this book and elsewhere, and two of her novels, I think she’s a better critic than she is a novelist, and I hope she continues to write more in the critical vein. I read these in a day. I’m stuck between three and four stars right now and will probably revisit this later. I was really looking forward to her essay on David Foster Wallace but was slightly disappointed that she concentrated mainly on a book I hadn’t read!

The final section is a long essay remembering David Foster Wallace. And various other words that make it real hard to take seriously what’s being said when it’s obvious the zadis internal picture of everything egotistical or dangerous or fe plain weird is a person wrapped in a straight jacket.


I wish I could rate this 4 stars. Occasional Essays by Zadie Smith. Cookies come in two flavours – persistent and transient. In her first role as Public Intellectual, she has pen, will travel, then write about whatever anyone pays her to write, with the implicit assumption that her opinions on any given smigh will be of interest.

This book is not yet featured on Listopia. One believes–as Naipaul put it–that the world is what it is and, moreover, that all our relations with it are necessarily inauthentic. Being, a section more about politics smifh anything else, interested me less. To her credit, one gets the sense that this mantle does not sit easily on her shoulders, that she sounds false in her own ears, too.

Her essays remind me, at their best, of the golden age of eighteenth-century English essays, clear-spoken, elegant, witty, and profoundly true: I eagerly engaged myself with her speech to the Columbia students on the manner in which she approaches her work while composing a novel. That last one is probably expendable, along with some of the more journalistic pieces, but if you care at all about contemporary literature, you really must check out the other two.

I gave Zadie Smith’s book of essays three stars, instead of four, because it’s clear she’s still in the process of formation. Netherlandthe essay claims, is perhaps the most perfect example of lyrical realism available today: That, and the fact smitu I five-starred both of the other works of Smith’s xmith I’ve perused, will have to suffice. They are both two of the very best the cinema has to offer us these days, of isea most of all the other films Smith reviewed in this piece weren’t worth seeing at all, even on DVD.
