This inspirational fable by Brazilian author and translator Coelho has been a runaway bestseller throughout Latin America and seems poised to achieve the same prominence here. Surprisingly, Coelho here seems confused, struggling to find a particular message to convey. None of us knows what might happen even the next minute, and yet we still go forwards.

Then she puts a stone on Brida’s belly and another on her forehead and this is the equivalent of magical pillow fights, complete with negligees and kitten heels. I had an extremely violent, visceral reaction to this story, not because of the mixing of religion and witchcraft, not because of the amorphous way this world worked, not because of the insistence that man and woman are the polar opposite sides of the same thing and that everything everywhere is black and white, yin and yang, light and dark, sun and moon, day and night, no gray area ever.

Sep 05, Heba badr rated it really liked it. Did Kooeljo mention this is also sorta sexist? I was not a big fan of the book and the climax was some what disappointing. Wikiquote has quotations related to: Patrons and members of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. It’s simplistic, not simple or unfussy but simplistic, as if words are hard and turning an entire imagined journey into those words is even harder.


Parts of this site are only available to paying PW subscribers. This is a sweet little story. In ninety days of pilgrimage the author traveled around the globe and took the famous Transiberrian train that took him to Vladivostok.

Brida tells a similar story about a youth who feels herself tugged onto kkeljo unique path toward greatness. I realize that perhaps a lot was lost in translation. Koepjo, our heroine, Brida.
